Slovakia, with its rich cultural heritage and beautiful nature, offers a number of pilgrimage sites that attract visitors from all over the world. These places have an exceptional spiritual atmosphere and are an interesting combination of religious faith, history and the beauty of nature.
Marianka is one of the oldest places of Christian pilgrimage in Slovakia. It is part of Bratislava and you can find there the Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. This church was originally Gothic and at the end of the 17th century it was reconstructed in Baroque style.
The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was elevated to the status of a minor basilica in 2011. There are Baroque altars and a statue of Our Lady of Tálen. Every September, several hundred, if not thousands of people make the pilgrimage here. People come from the surrounding area to draw water from the spring at the Chapel of the Holy Well.
This spring is said to be a miracle spring with healing power. There is also a Lourdes grotto where candles burn all year round and many messages are carved into the stone slabs.
Another important place is Šaštín-Stráže, where the Basilica of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows is located. A statue of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows was made near the castle in Šaštín and placed in a triangular chapel. In the past, during the Turkish wars, it was transferred to the castle and later it was placed again in the chapel. People used to go to it to pray and it was said to heal people.
The then Archbishop and a commission examined the miraculous cases and the results confirmed that the statue of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows was miraculous. In 1990, the first international pilgrimage was held in Šaštín, attended by several thousand faithful. The Basilica itself was even visited by Pope John Paul II.
The Calvary in Banská Štiavnica also offers visitors an unrepeatable atmosphere and spiritual experience. This place, away from the busy city, is famous for its chapels, crossroads and unique atmosphere. Pilgrims come here to relax, pray and admire the views of the historic town centre.
