Jasov Abbey was founded in 1188 and is one of the oldest monasteries in Slovakia. Its founder was the Hungarian king Béla III. The monastery was originally built for Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, but after his death it became a Cistercian monastery. The abbey has gone through various historical periods and changes, including Turkish invasions and restoration in the Baroque style in the 18th century.

Jasov Monastery began to take shape in the 13th century, when Franciscan monks founded the monastery. However, what we admire today is the result of extensive reconstruction in the 18th century. Its fascinating frescoes, rich decoration and exceptional sculptures rank it among the most beautiful works of Baroque architecture in Central Europe.
