Marianka is not only one of Slovakia’s most significant pilgrimage sites but also a rewarding destination for tourists regardless of their faith due to its beautiful natural environment. Located in the small village of the same name, about 19 km from the center of Bratislava, the valley with its calvary, monastery, basilica, Lourdes cave, and chapel is perfect for an easy walk.
Marianka is the oldest pilgrimage site in Slovakia, with its history dating back to around 1377 when, according to legend, a statue of the Virgin Mary was discovered in the forest near the current village. This discovery quickly became a center of religious interest and pilgrimage, leading to the construction of the first chapel on this site.
Over the following centuries, the pilgrimage site in Marianka was gradually expanded and improved. In the 17th century, under the patronage of the Habsburgs, monastic buildings were constructed for the Franciscans, who took care of the pilgrims and the sanctuary. The monastery and church were rebuilt and expanded several times, mainly in the Baroque style, which still dominates the architectural appearance of these sacred buildings.
Today, Marianka is known not only for its history and sacred architecture but also as a place of miracles and healings, attracting thousands of pilgrims from all over Slovakia and abroad. Mass pilgrimages are held annually, especially during Marian feasts, when believers come to seek protection and assistance for themselves and their families.
The Sacred Gems of Marianka
If you visit Marianka and find a place to park, head directly to the basilica. It is only a 5-minute walk from the official parking lot. The Basilica of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is the central point of the pilgrimage area. Inside the 18th-century church, you will find an altar painting with the gracious statue of the Virgin Mary. Next to the basilica is the monastery, which serves as a pilgrimage house providing simple accommodation for tourists and pilgrims. Spiritual exercises, retreats, baptisms, weddings, and various other events are often held here.
Marianka Valley, Ideal for Quiet Reflection
After viewing the basilica, you can continue along the path to the Marianka Valley. Here you will find the Stations of the Cross and the Lourdes Cave of the Virgin Mary, which is used for worship purposes. The Lourdes Cave in Marianka is a replica of the famous cave in Lourdes, France, where the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette. Believers usually light candles and say their prayers here. The Stations of the Cross consist of several chapels depicting the various stations of Jesus’ journey to Golgotha.
Miraculous Water from Marianka
The asphalt path in the middle of the forest will lead you to the Chapel of St. Anne with the Holy Well. The Chapel of St. Anne is a small but historically significant sacred building. It is dedicated to St. Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, and is a place where smaller pilgrimages and prayer meetings often take place.
According to legend, this chapel is the site where the Virgin Mary appeared and where the miraculous statue, the center of the cult in Marianka, was found. In the area, you can also draw water from the spring. Many legends speak of its healing effects, as evidenced by the marble thanksgiving plaques in the Marianka Valley.
Hiking Trails from Marianka
Marianka is situated at the foot of the Little Carpathians, in the southern part of Záhorie. Visitors thus have the opportunity to combine a visit to the pilgrimage site with hiking. One popular route is the ascent to Malá Baňa in Rača, which offers a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside. Nature lovers can also take hiking trails leading to Biely Kríž, Krasňany Gamekeeper’s Lodge, or Záhorská Bystrica. You can also set out to Pajštún Castle or Vilmoš Waterfalls.
If you are in Bratislava or the surrounding area, be sure to visit this interesting place. You won’t regret it.
